RED Construction has been awarded a 28 week £7m contract at Angel Central Shopping Centre, Islington.
The project, for CBRE Global Investors, includes the elevation of an existing ‘Angel Wings’ sculpture and construction of a new pedestrian link bridge including balcony extensions to the first-floor walkways. An innovative lifting process has been developed to lift the 12-tonne wings by 3.5metres with monitoring points to ensure the correct load transfer in accordance with the construction method statement. Beneath the link bridge an ellipse-shaped fully glazed kiosk unit is to be constructed integrated with new concrete faced steps, seating and landscaping planters are to be provided. On the first floor, an existing retail unit is to be converted to a restaurant with double height fully glazed curtain walling system with feature terracotta baguettes installed externally as a brise soleil. The existing ceilings, lighting, pavings and balustrading to the public areas are to be fully replaced to provide a more modern appearance.
Graham Sturge Managing Director of Farringdon based RED Construction commented that the firm was “proud to be working with CBRE Global Investors on such an exciting and creative project.”
